HISTORY:

Viking Rose has been berthed at Lake Tahoe and Seattle, Washington but we have little information about those years. The owner who sold us the boat used Anchorage, Alaska as his hailing port but sailed from California to St. Petersburg, Florida where we bought her. We took possession in July 1998 and replaced all electronics and began living aboard in August. Since then, we have cruised the Bahamas, down the island chain to Venezuela and Trinidad. We spent each hurricane season safely south in Venezuela and/or Trinidad, afterward heading north each year for extended stays at various islands including Martinique, Guadaloupe, Antigua, and St. Croix. In May 2004, we returned to the US and spent the summer and fall in the Chesapeake. After visiting Georgia and Florida, we are headed back to the Chesapeake.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND LAYOUT:

Viking Rose's first owner commissioned a special layout. Starting at the bow, there is an anchor locker and forward double berth with deep storage lockers beneath. (There are currently no cushions in this cabin since we used the area for storage during our extended cruise.) A door provides privacy between the cabin and the manual head with holding tank, sink, storage drawers, hanging locker (now with shelves), and shower. Another door is between the head and salon. The salon table to port may be lowered and converted to a double berth/lounge from which to watch TV or DVD movies secured above the single settee to starboard. A teak table extension has been mounted on the compression post and may be raised, lowered, or swiveled. At the companionway steps are the galley to port and nav station to starboard.

The factory-finished interior is hand-rubbed varnished teak with teak and holly sole. The salon is well lit with six large tinted windows 3/4 inch thick. If the sun is too bright, the curtains may be closed. Each side has four individual curtains, which allow you to uncover one, two, or three windows, unlike blinds or other window treatments, which require you to uncover all or none of the windows. The cook may watch for friends coming into the anchorage while preparing dinner.

Along the passageway to the stern cabin are a large pantry and five storage lockers to starboard facing an engine access panel. The stern cabin has an athwartship double bed, hanging locker, and sink with a door to the aft head with electric toilet and holding tank and more storage. Another door leads to the engine room.

SAILS:

The sail plan of this cutter is easily managed by one person because all three sails are furling, the main by a Hood electric in-mast furling system. The reason to have a ketch or yawl is to break up the sail plan so one person can manage it. The cutter's furling sails accomplish this goal without the need for an extra mast and rigging and their accompanying maintenance. A cutter goes up wind better than any other sail rig. Furling, unfurling, adjusting, and reefing are easily and safely accomplished since all lines and controls lead to the cockpit, a definite benefit on night passages or in bad weather.

The C10X Caribe dinghy with 17" tubes and double hull has a 6-month-old four-cycle Honda 20 HP outboard. The Honda is quiet and fast in addition to using one-third less gas than two-cycle engines. This means you can carry a third less gas. The large dinghy and powerful outboard allow you to anchor away from other boats and further from shore and the bugs. The 17" tubes keep you high and dry, even when loaded down with a week's worth of groceries. The Sunbrella dinghy cover protects the tubes from abrasion and the harmful rays of the sun.
