Comments:

Devon's Whisper is a custom finished boat completed in 1977 by its first owner. The quality of workmanship and well thought out interior layout is a tribute to the builder who sailed her extensively (including two trips through the Panama Canal). She was Christened Aralia and later renamed Devon's Whisper by on of the 5 prior owners. I purchased her in 2008 and had her in the yard for 19 months where she was extensively refitted and restored. Since that time she has been sailed in Galveston Bay and the ICW. Regular maintenance and many upgrades have been done since and now she is a seaworthy blue water cruiser ready to sail the world. Unfortunately due to my age and health this opportunity now falls to her next owner.

Accommodations:

As a kit boat the layout is somewhat unique and quite utilitarian making open areas and maximizing the living space below deck. The galley is L shaped on the port side below the companionway hatch. Ample storage space is afforded with multiple cupboards accessed through sliding doors (less interference while open and more secure in a rough sea). The refrigerator (Adler Barbour 2013) keeps fresh food and beverages quite cold and has ample room for two people on a week long passage. There are two ice trays which make cubes quickly in the freezer section and room for ice cream or frozen meat. The Force 10 stove is virtually new hardly used and more than adequate for 10 cooking up great meals in a seaway or anchorage. Above the stove is a small gimbaled Forespar Mini-Stove for quick meals for one or two in a seaway. Knife secure storage and easy access is made possible with a large magnetic rack by Global knives on the port cabin side. Extra table top food prep surfaces are supplied by a large maple cutting board atop the stove, a folding side table and across the way on the extra large nav counter top. To starboard is the nav station, a standing configuration allowing quick and comfortable access to instruments and charts in a seaway or anchorage. The extra space afforded by the lack of a bench seat makes for extra storage space below the extra large chart table top and greater mobility back and forth from the cockpit. Forward from the galley on the port side of the main salon area is a long bench seat over storage lockers underneath and behind the cushions. On top is a long counter which has several teak storage boxes designed for cups, saucers, plates, bowls and utensils all readily available yet securely stored in a seaway. Ample cabinet space is afforded by several lockers with sliding doors above and a large bookshelf in the middle. Forward on the main bulkhead wall on the port side is an array of shelves designed for canisters of sundries, books, CDs, DVDs, wine glasses etc. Next to this is a propane Sig Cozy Cabin Heater which not only warms up the entire below decks but provides a small cooktop for a cup of tea or soup! A beautifully finished teak dining table divides the salon and fold opens to provide room for 4 diners seated athwart. On the starboard side is an extra long settee with oversize custom throw pillows upholstered in Carleton V designer fabric in 100% linen. This settee doubles as a berth for two tall adults. There are several storage cabinets above and a wine or liquor bar with a tambour door in the middle. Below the cushions is a large storage locker. All the cushions are automotive grade velour with vinyl undersides (2008). On the bulkhead is a reading lamp on a gooseneck and Weems & Plath oil lamp. Three other reading lamps and two overhead lamps are augmented by a large Weems & Plath Salon lantern and two Denn Hann lamps at the nav and galley areas. A fishing pole rack and sturdy brass grab rails are positioned on the cabin headliner and in the galley and nave areas to provide security moving about in a seaway. Forward through the large teak doorway (which doubles as a door for the head) is the large V berth sleeping area. On the starboard an extra long double berth and on the port a shorter single berth provide comfortable sleeping area for three adults or two adults and two children. A teak bulkhead with two access doors to the chain locker is at the forepeak with large storage space and cabinet space accessible from teak doors below or removable wooden platforms under the cushions. On the wall opposite the berth is a cosmetic mirror in the form of a brass porthole along with a brass grab rail and step up for the elevated berths. The head is to port through the teak door. It is a comfortable and private area with adequate space to move around in, multiple storage cabinets, formica countertop, ss sink and hot & cold pressurized water, manual foot pump and shower. The toilet is a practical manually pumped Groco. Lighting is provided by 12 volt
overhead fixtures, bulkhead reading lamps (2) and a Taylor ccf panel over the main berth. In addition are two brass oil lanterns (Weems & Plath and Vermount Brass) on the port and starboard bulkheads. A Weems & Plath ship's clock and barometer is on the starboard cabin wall. A large hatch with a plexiglass top opens to the foredeck above and two dorade vents and a mushroom vent in the berthing area and head provide excellent ventilation. Two flexible solar panels with their extension wiring are stowed below the cushions and can be positioned on the foredeck through this hatch. Below the port berth is storage and a small 9 gallon holding tank plumbed for deck or overboard pumpout in open seas clean water compliant.

Deck & Hull:

The teak deck has been maintained regularly with Teakguard and is in good overall condition. The bowsprit was replaced in 2017 with a custom built solid teak bowsprit (painted white for weather proofing and maintenance purposes). The bow rollers and hardware was serviced and polished at that
time. The original Douglas Fir Sampson posts were removed at deck level and replaced by a custom SS platform and large SS bollard for a more lasting and secure arrangement. A Simpson Lawrence manual windlass is mounted on the sprit. Two teak dorade boxes and 3" SS vents with Marinco SS guards were installed on the cabin top forward over the V berth and head, along with a solar vent in the deck over the head. Granny rails at the mast step provide a secure base in a seaway while tending to the mainsail at the mast.. Additional amenities include a shower, whale bilge pump and stereo speakers in the cockpit. Two large toggle flush mounted handles were installed on the cockpit floor for ease of removal and engine access. A new Sunbrella Dodger was added in 2015. Five coats of epoxy barrier and bottom paint was applied in 2017.
